In today's competitive employment marketplace forward thinking
companies are looking to hire high quality people, quickly and cost effectively. Long gone
are the days when a company can place an employment newspaper advertisement for a C++
programmer and expect to fill the position. On-line recruiting comes at an opportune time
(unemployment is the lowest it has been in over 29 years and relief is not soon expected)
when new sourcing methods are desperately needed.
What Internet Recruiting Offers
The Internet is a powerful communication medium and, as such, is the
most powerful recruiting tool available today. When properly utilized, Internet recruiting
aids in the hiring of top talent, reduces your time-to-hire, and lowers your recruiting
costs.
Hires Top Talent
Companies that properly use the Internet to recruit find that the
candidates who apply are of higher quality. People who use the Internet as a job-hunting
tool tend to be better educated and more computer literate than non-users. Also, job
seekers find it is less time consuming to use the Internet than other traditional
job-hunting avenues and find that it presents them with more information about the company
and specific career opportunities. With this information they can then decide if they wish
to contact the company to be considered for the position.
Reduces Your Time-To-Fill
Because the Internet is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the
time it takes to advertise a position on-line is instantaneous. This alone can save you as
much as 5 days off your time-to-fill. Response time from the candidate also can be
reduced. Some companies are reporting that after posting an opening in the morning they
were receiving resumes later that afternoon. Imagine being able to present prescreened
candidates to your hiring manager in 2 days rather than 2 weeks!
Lowers Your Recruiting Costs
When you compare the direct costs of traditional recruiting methods
(newspaper advertisements, career fairs, open houses), the cost to advertise your openings
on the Internet is significantly lower. A large majority of job positing sites charge $100
or less for a single job positing. Employment Management Association recently conducted a
survey to address the advertising costs of traditional methods versus Internet survey
calculated the average advertising cost-per-hire. They found that traditional advertising
cost-per-hire was estimated at $3,295, while Internet advertising cost-per-hire was
estimated at $377. One client of mine reduced their newspaper advertising cost by $50,000
by advertising their open positions on the Internet and they had better results.
Another way Internet recruiting can reduce your costs is through
reducing the workload of your staff. Since resumes now can be received electronically, the
time it takes to open envelopes and manually sort resumes is reduced as well as the time
it takes to reply to candidates. In short, the Internet can streamline your hiring process
and thus lowers your recruiting costs.
