Increasing Traffic to
Your Corporate Career Web Site: Search Engine
Optimization
The use of search engines to find endless information
and resources about every imaginable topic remains
strong, and while there is no definitive count regarding
the amount of employment queries conducted via search
engines, it is likely that more and more job seekers are
including them in their Internet career research
activities.
Though numerous search engines exist, the majority of
queries take place on three sites. According to July
2005 statistics compiled by Nielsen//NetRatings, of the
4.5 billion searches that took place during the month,
nearly half (46.2%) were through Google, followed by
Yahoo! (22.5%) and MSN (12.6%
For
companies with significant, ongoing hiring needs, such
as a national sales force, ensuring that your corporate
career Web site is retrieved as a top result by search
engines during queries for “sales jobs” can help you
attract a greater number of applicants to your Web site.
Why have candidates try to pick your ad out from
thousands of others on the major job boards when you can
employ search engine optimization (SEO) tactics to
divert them directly to your employment pages?
Search engine
optimization is also useful for hard-to-fill positions.
As an example, The David Group conducted a Google.com
query for “respiratory tech jobs.” The fifth result was
a link to a posting on the Delaware Technical and
Community College’s Web site for a respiratory care
instructor at the college (in Georgetown, DE). Kennedy
Memorial Hospitals in Cherry Hill, NJ, also made it into
the top 10 results for this search.
Understanding the Basics of Search Engine
Optimization
There is no need for human resource professionals to
become experts in search engine optimization. But by
gaining an understanding of the basic principles and how
search engine optimization can benefit your recruitment
efforts, you’ll be better equipped to work with your IT
colleagues to implement an SEO strategy.
Before examining what you should consider as part of
your strategy, it’s important to discuss the types of
search engines that are used today and how they work.
“Crawlers” compile lists and results by using software
to search the Web. Directories rely on people to review
Web sites and determine if they should be catalogued
within the directory. There are also hybrid sites, which
use both tactics to create listings. Yahoo.com is an
example of a hybrid search engine, offering visitors the
option to browse its directory or search the Web.
Given how search engines work, organizations that seek
to optimize their results are simply creating a Web site
that encompasses tactics to improve the odds that their
site will be found by search engines and ranked among
top results.
Tips and Tactics for Optimization
In addition to optimizing your site, you should submit
your career site to search engines to ensure that it
will be found. There are paid and free submission
options. Paid submissions are often recommended because
they guarantee your site will be reviewed and paying for
a submission generally speeds up the process. You don’t
need a huge budget for Web site optimization, as fees
are relatively affordable. Avoid any service that
promises to register your site with “hundreds” of search
engines, as only a handful are used for most queries.
Below are some basic tips to follow when developing your
search engine optimization strategy.
Create Content that Includes Your Ideal Keywords – For
your site to be retrieved during a search engine query,
the keywords that the user has entered must match
keywords found within the content of your career pages.
So, following the example of a company with a national
sales force that requires a continual applicant flow,
the keyword search string would be “sales jobs,” as this
is most likely the phrase sales job seekers will enter
into search engines. The ideal approach is to add a page
of content to your career Web site that is specifically
for sales professionals. Include the keyword phrase in
this page, as well as in other pages throughout the
career section as appropriate. Make sure that the
keywords are in the page’s HTML text and not embedded in
graphics, as search engines cannot recognize text within
graphic elements.
Establish Links from Other Relevant Sites – Search
engines rank sites based on how other sites view their
relevance and sites with more links to them typically
rank higher. While this may seem like a challenging
endeavor at first, there are many possibilities. Most
chamber of commerce Web sites will post links to area
employers. Review local professional association Web
sites to see if they provide similar links. This is also
where postings on commercial job boards come in handy,
as employers typically include a Web site link within
job postings. Finally, link relevant pages internally
throughout your site and make sure they are HTML links
and not graphical links.
Avoid the Use of Frames – Frames make it more difficult
for search engines to find pages. Work with your
designers and programmers to build a career section that
does not rely on too many frames.
The Bottom Line on Meta Tags
Meta tags used to play a more significant role in search
engine rankings. Today, most search engines ignore meta
tags and consider a site based solely on the content
within its pages. Today, meta tags are most commonly
used to support content that already exists within a
particular page. Just remember that adding a laundry
list of meta tags to your site’s home page, or any other
page, no longer has any impact on search engine results.

Four-in-Ten Working Dads Would Give Up Breadwinner
Role to Spend More Time With Their Children,
CareerBuilder.com’s Annual Father’s Day Survey Finds
On par with previous surveys,
four-in-ten working dads say they would stay at home and
assume the role of Mr. Mom if their spouse or partner
earned enough to support their families. Struggling to
balance work and home, 44 percent of working dads say
they are willing to take a pay cut to spend more time
with their children; 16 percent would take a pay cut of
five percent or more. The CareerBuilder.com survey,
“Working Dads 2006,” was conducted from February 21 to
March 6 and included more than 225 men, employed
full-time, with children under the age of 18 living at
home.
