A Note From The Editor

Monster Employment Index Rises Sharply in February, Demonstrating Continued Strength in U.S. Online Job Demand

The Monster Employment Index moved sharply higher in February, as a majority of industries, occupations, and all nine U.S. Census Bureau regions registered increased online job availability during the month. For the second consecutive month, the Index shot up six points, demonstrating strong, stepwise growth in online hiring activity, largely driven by increased demand for workers in construction and management. On a year over year basis, the Index was up 35 points, or 29 percent, in February - a rate of growth slightly above the 2005 monthly average of 27 percent.

Revisiting Your Corporate Career Web Site: Time for an Update?
By The David Group

The economy continues to improve, and hiring at your organization has picked up steam again. In addition to having requisitions that need to be filled, you are faced with the knowledge that your corporate career Web site has been relatively dormant the past few years—a reflection of your company’s limited hiring activities.

But now that you’re advertising again, you can be sure that the Internet is one of the first places potential applicants will go to learn more about your company. An outdated site can turn candidates away. Here’s how to get caught up quickly.

Examine Your Existing Site from a Job Seeker’s Perspective
Go through your Web site and make sure that the content is accurate and that there are no problems with the site’s functionality. Look at it from the perspective of a job seeker. Is your content current? If it is easy for site visitors to tell that you have not updated your pages in years, it will have a negative impact on your ability to convert visitors into applicants.

To fix outdated content quickly, remove references to dates whenever possible. Analyze Web site traffic patterns with the help of your IT department to figure out which pages get the most traffic. Typically, the careers home page gets the bulk of visitors, so at the very least make sure your home page has fresh content.

Do a similar review for functionality. Links that no longer work, poor job search capabilities and cumbersome online application processes result in frustrated job seekers. If it takes too long to upload a resume or if visitors encounter error messages during the job search or application process, you can be assured that they will leave your site.

Even if your organization is planning to launch a new career Web site within the next several months, you should still review your existing pages. Launching a new career Web site is a complex, long-term project that can be delayed due to variables out of your control. Don’t ignore your current site just because you think a new one is right around the corner.

Laying the Groundwork for a New Career Web SiteIf you haven’t been focused on your career Web site for awhile, you probably aren’t current on best practices in corporate Web site recruiting. Understanding current best practices and what today’s job seekers expect when they visit a corporate career Web site is an essential part of determining the content and functionality you’ll want to include in your updated site.

Recruitsoft/iLogos Research has specialized in establishing and tracking corporate career Web site recruiting best practices among Global 500 companies since the mid-1990s. In addition to elements such as a link from the home page, information about the corporate culture, an overview of employee benefits, the ability to e-mail jobs to a friend, job agents and a separate section for college recruitment, the researchers also note the following best practices:

  • Job search by location, category and key word
  • Pre-assessment tools for each position
  • Choice of resume submission (cut-and-paste, builder or attachment)
  • Connecting the application process to a specific job opening
  • Anonymous application option
  • Re-use of candidate information (storing a resume and/or profile)

What you need to keep in mind is that while these are established best practices, your site should be developed to reflect the particular needs of your job seekers and your company’s hiring practices. There’s no reason to create a Web site with extensive functionality if you typically have a small number of hires and receive a limited number of resumes per month. If that is the case, then focus on the content of your site and make sure it is effective in meeting the information needs of individuals interested in working at your organization.

The Next Wave of Corporate Web Site Recruiting
Clearly, corporate Web site recruiting will continue to evolve, particularly as the economy improves and the demographics of the labor market shift. Given these trends, along with an increasingly global workforce, what does Recruitsoft/iLogos Research see for the future of corporate Web site recruiting?

  • Multi-language capabilities that accommodate a more diverse, global workforce
  • Interview scheduling
  • Ex-employee alumni programs
  • Ability for job seekers to review their application status/receive feedback from employers
  • Interactive assessment tests/role-playing to gauge skills
  • Metrics and benchmarking tools that allow management to measure the success of their recruiting efforts against the corporate business strategy

Employment Studies and Trends

The Herman Trend Alert - Where are the People?

As we warn of the growing shortage of skilled workers---the most severe in history, we are often asked if the problem is caused by the retirement of the 76.4 Million people in the Baby Boom generation. Our answer has to be a guarded "no." Certainly, some Boomers will retire over the next few years; however, many more will not. The problem is more complicated.

Following the Baby Boom generation, births during 1946 to 1964, 68.5 Million children were born into Generation X (1965 to 1985). That sharp decline in the birthrate is a major contributor to our shortage. We saw 2.6 percent annual increases in the birth rate in the 1970s, but by the 1990s the birth rate in the United States had dropped to a 1.1 percent annual increase. This perspective was highlighted in a recent report issued by the Rand Corporation, a non-profit think tank conducting research studies for over 50 years.

One-In-Ten Workers Admit to Drinking on Company Time on St. Patrick's Day, CareerBuilder.com Survey Finds

St. Patrick's Day, like many holidays, is a time for celebration for workers of all backgrounds. While some may partake in parade-watching, group lunches and treats, others elect to drink in the festivities. One-in-ten workers say they participate in after-work happy hours on St. Patrick's Day, while another one-in-ten admit to having an alcoholic beverage on company time on St. Patrick's Day. CareerBuilder.com's survey, "Drinks on the Job," was completed in December 2005 and featured more than 2,050 workers representing multiple backgrounds and industries.
