Monster Employment Index
Surges to New All-time High in January, Indicating
Strong Rebound in U.S. Online Job Demand
The Monster Employment Index soared to a new all-time
high in January, as a majority of industries,
occupations, and all nine U.S. Census Bureau regions
registered higher levels of online job availability
during the month. The Index jumped six points, from 145
in December to 151 in January, rebounding strongly from
a seasonal slowdown during the final month of last year
and mirroring a similar trend seen at the beginning of
the previous two years.
Sharply increased demand for white-collar workers in
business and financial; IT; legal; and office and
administrative support helped drive the Index higher
during January. Online job availability in the
accommodation and food services; transportation and
warehousing; and educational services also showed solid
growth. In addition, online demand for protective
service (security and law enforcement) and military
specific (including aerospace and defense) occupations
rose to new all-time highs in January after dipping in
November and December.

Tribune Publishing, a division of Tribune Company, today
announced that its 11 metropolitan newspapers have
agreed to participate in the Audit Bureau of
Circulations' new Insert Verification Service (IVS). The
new service will provide advertisers with audited
measures of the accuracy of Sunday preprint
distribution.

with unsuccessful job applicants. That's shameful
As an HR person for 25 years now, I'm tired of having to
apologize for my profession. Yet I don't find the
criticism of me and my colleagues misplaced. It's
depressing at times to answer scores of e-mails from
job-holders who share stories of bureaucratic,
officious, even hateful treatment at the hands of their
company's human-resources staff. But as poorly as many
HR departments treat employees, their dealings with
prospective hires are 1,000 times worse.

According to a recent survey of 140
executive recruiters, 70% are confident or very
confident that the executive employment market will
improve during the next six months. In the first six
months of 2006, the executive search industry is
expecting a 26% increase in the number of assignments
received from corporate clients — a significant increase
from the 17% rise in assignments reported for all of
2005.
