On the brink of The Super
Bowl….time to post jobs.
By Brian Weis
A few years ago, I called a fellow recruiter late on
Friday afternoon a few minutes before five o’clock. Our
ritual was to share recruiting war stories for that
week. My networking friend cut me off abruptly in a
panic saying he couldn’t chat and that he was extremely
busy. I asked with what? He shared that he was trying to
get all of his jobs posted and updated on Monster.com.
I didn’t realize until a few moments after we hung up
that he was trying to get his jobs online the Friday
before the Super Bowl to take advantage of Monster.com’s
Super Bowl advertising. (The 2006 Superbowl will feature
ads from CareerBuilder.com)
I
followed up with him the following Friday to ask how
successful the campaign was. He said he had an
overwhelming response and it was worth the extra effort
late on a Friday afternoon. The high response rate did
not end on that Sunday though, it continued deep into
the following week as the various media outlets analyzed
the Super Bowl ads and advertisers. The extra buzz
continued to help his high response rate to his ads.
Over the following years we both tried to leverage
the extra exposure online advertising/job boards
received during and around the Super Bowl. Here are a
few simple yet effective tips and conclusions:
1) Location, Location, Location – Get your
jobs posted on the sites that are advertising during
Super Bowl (if you have a subscription or the budget),
ok this is a no brainer but worth mentioning. Note: At
the writing of this article we were not privy to the
final list of Super Bowl advertisers. However, it
appears that Careerbuilder.com is advertising this year
and HotJobs/Monster, too past Super Bowl advertisers,
are taking a pass.
2) The Ripple Effect - If you do not have
packages/subscription to those sites advertising during
the game, at least get your jobs posted on all the sites
you do (this includes your own corporate website). The
residual effect of the Super Bowl advertising is huge.
- First, the awareness of online job hunting will
get a lot of coverage and media exposure. In previous
years, Careerbuilders.com/Monster.com’s traffic spiked
huge after the game. Other career sites (non
advertisers) also reported traffic spikes. In theory
because job seekers looked for additional job hunting
resources once they jumped online.
- Second, employers also noticed an increase in
traffic to their corporate career sections. Largely
because many job ads or profiles contain links back to
the company’s site. So it is imperative your jobs are
updated on your employment section.
3) Timing is Everything – It is common
knowledge that search results in a jobs database returns
the most current jobs first, so posting late on Friday
with everyone else may not be the best day/time to
update/enter your jobs. By the time those ads run on
Sunday and a job hunter gets to his/her computer your
Friday job posting could be pages deep into the results.
It maybe more advantageous to spend a few minutes over
the weekend and update your jobs that Sunday
morning/afternoon to get prime first page positioning.
4) Better Late Then Never – The days following
after the Super Bowl is a media circus analyzing the
best ads, worst ads, etc. The extra press for those
advertises and exposure to the industry will continue to
drive job seekers to the web. Keep your jobs updated,
post new jobs and if the site(s) allows refreshing,
refresh the posting date to return your jobs to the top
of the search results.
In re-reviewing my own tips the conclusions are not
rocket science but the extra attention you give to your
job postings this time of year should reap higher
candidate traffic.
