How to register and use your company’s .jobs domain
By Davis Advertising

1. Learn more about the new .jobs domain

Sponsored by SHRM, the new .jobs domain offers job seekers an exact destination for your job and career information. Your “companyname.jobs” domain will clearly point candidates to your job-related pages without the need to search for a career link on your corporate home page.

Not only will this enhance candidate hospitality, it will also make it easier for search engines and spiders to find and aggregate company job listings on the Internet.

A start-up trade name registration period of 60 days has been set between June 19th and August 19th of 2005. During this period, it is required that you substantiate your company name as an employer organization.

2. Select a registrar

A list of approved registrars is available on employmedia.com. Make sure that you compare prices.
We found that prices during the start-up period fluctuate between $120 and $199 for one year. Prices may be lower after August 19, 2005 but we recommend that you act as quickly as possible to secure your company’s name.

3. Fill out an online application

Most of the registrars offer a simple online registration process. You’ll be asked to provide some form of proof that you have a right to the requested name. In most cases, a company’s existing URL will be sufficient. Your application will be verified by the registry operator, Employ Media.

Most applications will be verified within 3 business days if there are no questions or problems with the request.

Instances in which there’s more than a single valid request for an identical companyname.jobs will enter the .jobs conflict resolution process.

After the initial 60-day period, valid name requests will be on a first-come, first-served basis

4. Work with your IS department or Web provider to post your career site content to your .jobs site

Once your registration is confirmed, you should provide your IS or Web services provider with the confirmation. We suggest that you may want to start by mirroring your career section on your new .jobs domain. Your service provider will be able to give you advice on any database issues, keyword optimization techniques, and the best use of your new job-specific domain name.

Feel free to contact Davis if you need help with the transition, improving your existing career site, or if you’d like to develop a brand-new career site for your company.

5. Measure your results

Because this is a new domain, it will take some time for job seekers to become familiar with its existence. Keeping track of how many people visit your new .jobs site or apply online through your .jobs pages will help you measure the effectiveness of the new domain.

A few months after activation, we suggest that you search for specific jobs on several search sites to see if your .jobs postings show up on the results pages. On some search sites you can register to receive e-mail notification when a search engine has referenced your specific job pages.

Industry experts do expect an increase in the number of job listings and career information that will be available through searches on sites such as Google and Yahoo! Some even predict that paid text-only job postings may lose their appeal. Whatever the outcome, we strongly urge you to secure your .jobs domain today.
