A Note From The Editor

Google Has Your Data: Should You Be Afraid? - Part One

Google has become a corporate media conglomerate focused on generating revenue by incessantly pushing advertisements at its users. Now, corporate Google is bent on monetizing every user through keeping a careful watch on every Web page users access and every file users open on local machines.

With one of the most efficient and widely used search systems today, Google's computers crawl the Internet, sucking up every imaginable type of information available on Web sites everywhere.

Its free search products let users find this information quickly. Its desktop search toolbar extends Google's search capabilities to catalogued listings of hard drives for near instant searches for local data. In addition, Google reads users' private e-mail sent through its Gmail service and private e-mail stored on users' hard drives through its desktop-search software.

New Search Engine Provides Help in Finding Fresh Jobs
Invisible Dot formally announced its new search engine, jobrobots.com, that automatically scours many job sites at once to help job seekers speed up and simplify job search tasks and discover hidden career opportunities.

"Job hunters have asked us for the ability to find jobs from just one web site,” explained Will Gilmore of JobRobots.com. "We have accomplished this, but have gone a step further to ensure that jobs are as “fresh” as possible and not stale postings that waste precious time and frustrate users."

JobRobots.com currently has more than 500,000 job listings in the United States and Canada, and is growing exponentially with their proprietary search and data gathering web applications.

US Facing Surplus of Hispanic Workers?

The second largest contributor to Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product is the money sent back to families in the country from citizens who are working in other countries, particularly in the United States. That amount may soon surpass the revenue generated from Mexico’s leading industry, oil. Labor, much of it unskilled or semi-skilled, is the country’s most significant export.

A wide range of American employers use Hispanic workers as full-time, long-term employees, and as transient and temporary workers. Employers have found that these employees are most often dedicated and hard working. Their strong work ethic is accompanied by a welcome appreciation for having a job and respect for management. Interestingly, these values which built American industry, are lacking in many US citizens---both white and black. While longer-time workers complain about employer use of Hispanic immigrants, there are important differences in productivity and attitude.

Undocumented Mexican workers in the United States are a primary source of day labor for landscapers, construction and home remodeling companies, cleaning contractors, and similar employers whose need for less-skilled labor may vary from day to day. In many cities, there are established pick-up points where day workers congregate for employment opportunities. Employers looking for people drive up, hire workers on the spot, and transport them to the job site(s). At the end of the workday, they return them to the meeting point.

Many of these companies hiring undocumented workers pay them in cash, usually a reasonable wage. The amount is typically economical for the employer, but substantially more than the workers could make if they had remained back home in Mexico. They don’t pay taxes, insurance, or other benefits. This practice is illegal, of course, but enforcement authorities simply do not have enough staff to adequately police this shadowy segment of the economy. With low overhead, businesses employing this type of labor have a competitive advantage.

When work is plentiful, foreign workers encourage their friends from Mexico to join them. So many have migrated to the US that in some areas, there is a slight surplus of labor. This problem will intensify, potentially driving down wages.

Study: Effective Recruiting Tied to Stronger Financial Performance

Organizations with superior recruiting practices — such as filling jobs quickly, hiring their first-choice candidate and using employee referrals — financially outperform those with less effective programs, according to a new study by Watson Wyatt, a leading human capital consulting firm. The study also found that pay-for-performance and stock-based compensation programs are associated with higher shareholder returns.

Watson Wyatt’s Human Capital Index (HCI) study found that successful recruiting is a strong indicator of higher shareholder value. Companies that fill positions within two weeks provided total return to shareholders (TRS) of 59 percent between 2002 and 2004 versus 11 percent at companies that required at least seven weeks to fill positions. Additionally, companies that typically fill a position after just one offer is made had a three-year TRS of 44 percent versus 32 percent for companies that typically have to make two or more offers to fill an opening.
