Local firms link in to Internet job referral site

When Safend, a data security firm based in Tel Aviv, Israel, went looking for a new regional sales director for its Philadelphia office it skipped the usual newspaper ads and postings at traditional online job sites.

It opted instead for LinkedIn, a 2-year-old national Web site that deals exclusively in business networking.

Safend was not alone. In the past six months, Philadelphia-area membership in the service has risen by 100 percent to more than 45,000 users.

The advantage of the site is the ability to find qualified candidates through a referral process made possible by a network of business associates, said Dor Skuler, vice president of business development for Safend.

The network, established by inviting business associates to the site who, in turn, invite their associates to the site, helps eliminate the guesswork in finding and hiring the "right" employee, said Konstantin Guericke, vice president of marketing and co-founder of LinkedIn, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif.

"When you just get someone's résumé, there are always some doubts about how accurate it is and some people just interview well, and after two months you realize they are just not a good fit," Guericke said. "You can't really tell that from a résumé, but you can find that out if it comes through a referral to you."

For Safend, LinkedIn's process helped to reduce the time and effort involved in finding the most qualified candidate, a plus to the firm because it doesn't have a human resources department to handle such functions.

"You don't want to get hundreds of résumés. You only want to get qualified candidates," Skuler said. "And I, indeed, only received very qualified candidates. If you put it just in the paper or on [Web site] Monster you get bombarded with hundreds of résumés."

The networks are also useful in establishing new business relationships, as well as maintaining existing ones, Skuler said.

"It's a great tool when you target a company you want to work with. It's a very effective way to find out the names and titles of people you should be contacting and a way to get in touch with them through a third party that is mutually trusted," Skuler said.

Employment Studies and Trends

Hiring is projected to be strong in the second half of 2005. A survey by MRI International found 50.4% of respondents plan to increase their mid-to-upper level management staffs, and another 42.7% plan to maintain their current staff size. According to CareerBuilder.com, half of hiring managers surveyes plan to add staff in Q3 while only one-in-ten plan to decrease their headcounts, and 41% say they are having trouble finding skilled workers.
