A Note From The Editor

.Jobs coming soon

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers today approved a petition by HR managers to create a new Internet extension for the sole purpose of posting corporate jobs. Technically a top-level domain, the new extension is appropriately named JOBS, and Internet addresses using it as a suffix would be known as www.CompanyName.jobs. (ICANN also approved a .TRAVEL extension. It’s intended to make travel information easier to find and will be made available to airlines, travel agencies and companies and to government tourism offices.)

Breaking News

Yahoo! HotJobs (Nasdaq: YHOO), a leader in online recruiting and HR technology, today announced a distribution relationship with 4Jobs.com, a unique and diverse network of niche web sites, which will add more than 6,000 local and industry-specific sites to the Yahoo! HotJobs network. Effective immediately, Yahoo! HotJobs job listings will be exhibited across this network of sites, providing companies with broader exposure to local and highly-specialized talent.

“This agreement creates significant benefits for both recruiters and job seekers,” said David Brensilber, vice president of business affairs at Yahoo! HotJobs. “By adding more than 6,000 web sites to our network, recruiters can reach a larger, more diverse talent pool, while at the same time, target specific subsets of job seekers. Also, job seekers using any of the 4Jobs.com sites will now have access to more jobs relevant to them.”

The relationship with 4Jobs.com provides a single point of access for Yahoo! HotJobs' customers, while significantly expanding their reach to local communities and specific industries such as health care and information technology. For example, a Philadelphia hospital looking for nurses can post its openings on Yahoo! HotJobs and the listings will now also appear on PhillyJobs.com, Nurses.com and hundreds of other local and relevant medical sites nationwide - with no extra work or cost.

New Domain Extension .JOBS

What is .Jobs?

Employ Media has joined forces with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and VeriSign, Inc. to create, by way of application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a new Top Level Domain: .jobs.

The .jobs TLD would be a Sponsored TLD, or sTLD. An sTLD is created for the purpose of serving a specific Community. In the case of .jobs, the Community is defined as the people who deal in the human element of an organization, notably recruitment on behalf of their employer organization.

To serve this Community, domains within the .jobs sTLD will be in the format of: www.companyname.jobs , such as www.exxon.jobs  or www.sony.jobs. This format provides the Community with an exact destination, or digital identity, to communicate or otherwise interact with the labor market. The scope of .jobs, in terms of functionality and visibility, is global.

What is .jobs for?
Simply put, .jobs would provide to those charged with recruiting responsibilities on behalf of their employer organization the ability to communicate the exact destination of their organization's employment-related content.

.jobs domain is alive, alive!

It's official. The .jobs domain is now a reality.

There is so much I have to say about this that I don't know where to start, but here are a few immediate thoughts:

  1. Don't underestimate the potential of this occurrence greatly putting the current Internet recruiting industry on its head.
  2. Employers will actually have to buy into this idea and promote these URLs in order to achieve success. HR people have a major herd mentality, so the early adopters are going to have to buy into this idea and spread the virus.
  3. Job seekers will have to get used to using .jobs when searching employment opportunities (see No. 2).
  4. Signing-up and buying the domain will need to be incredibly easy, so a non-technical person can obtain a .jobs domain.
  5. The .jobs folks need to start lobbying Google and selling them on the relevancy of URLs with .jobs as opposed to .com-type domains. For example, .edu and .gov domains carry greater weight on Google because of their guaranteed relevance. If the .jobs domain carries similar weight, the game really changes.
  6. The data is going to have to stay pure. If engineering.jobs, marketing.jobs, etc. ever get sold in conjunction with statefarm.jobs, .jobs will have no greater benefit than a .net.
  7. Employ Media, the organization managing the .jobs domain, will need to police submissions efficiently and effectively.
  8. The cost will need to keep out potential spammers.
  9. It increases the significance of the corporate career center as the destination site for job seekers, as opposed to other mediums like job sites.
  10. Search engines are primed to become king of the job search process.

Employment Studies and Trends

CFOs Determine Top Priorities for 2005
Executive Recruiter News reports that a survey of 1,400 CFOs across the US suggests they are most concerned with their organizations' revenue growth and the containment of employee healthcare costs. The survey by accounting and finance staffing company Robert Half Management Resources also finds that recruiting and retaining qualified staff ranks among their company's three highest priorities and that projected cost increases in employee recruitment ranks among the three most likely areas of organizational cost increases through year end. "CFOs are ready for the prospect of growing their business…especially after a long period of economic and regulatory challenges," says Executive Director Paul McDonald. "They also realize the importance of stepping up recruiting and retention efforts to boost productivity and revenue."
