Monster Employment Index
Surges Higher in March,
Continuing Strong Three-month Growth Trend in U.S.
Online Job Demand
U.S. online job demand and
online recruitment activity increased significantly in
March, according to the latest findings of the Monster
Employment Index. Measuring strong growth in online job
availability across all Index categories, the Monster
Employment Index jumped from 122 in February 2005 to 130
in March, establishing a new all-time high for the Index
since its inception. The Index's March level marked a
very sharp increase in online job availability compared
to a year ago, when the Index stood at just 97, and
capped a first-quarter trend of steady, stepwise growth
in U.S. online job demand since December of last year.

Using Structured Interviews for
Selecting and Developing Employees

Different jobs require different competencies. The
purpose of structured, competency-based interviewing is
to help organizations hire and promote people who will
succeed in their jobs. Competencies are important
because they can be used to improve performance (both
individual and organizational) in at least three ways:
selection, feedback, and development.
Selection
To the extent new employees can be hired into the job
already possessing most, if not all, of the critical
competencies, they will be more successful more quickly.
Competencies can be used to guide recruitment (the
company seeks to identify recruiting sources rich in
critical competencies) and selection (the company builds
structured interviews around the critical competencies).
Feedback
Research has shown that employees receiving feedback
about their strengths and weaknesses improve their
performance more than those who don't receive feedback.¹
Further, it appears that those who need it most are the
ones who benefit the most from feedback. Competencies
provide a useful framework for organizing job-relevant
feedback.

Recruiters’ Confidence Soars As
Economy
Continues To Add Executive Level Jobs
From Execunet -
The threat of inflation has not tempered expectations
for the executive employment market, as ExecuNet’s
Recruiters Confidence Index climbed to a new high in
March. The monthly survey of executive recruiters
conducted by ExecuNet, the executive job search and
recruiting network, reveals hiring is expected to
continue to increase in the second and third quarters of
this year.
According to the survey of 103 executive recruiters, 78%
are confident or very confident the executive employment
market will improve during the next six months -
surpassing a twenty-two month high of 76% in January.
During the next six months, the executive search
industry is expecting a 16% increase in the number of
assignments received from corporate clients.

Final Note - On The
Lighter Side
Worst Running Late Excuse
Last year, the Monday
after turning clocks ahead for day light savings time,
an employee of our organization, called in to report she
was running late. She explained she was running an hour
late because she did not turn her clocks ahead over the
weekend.
When she got in I pointed
out that if she did not turn her clocks ahead she would
have been in an hour early.
After thinking about it
she blushed and we both had a good laugh.
