A Note From The Editor

Nearly Half of U.S. Employers Fail to Implement Formal Diversity Recruitment Programs, and Diverse Job Seekers Are Taking Notice

Monster®, the leading global online careers and recruitment resource and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc., and Diversity Best Practices today announced the availability of a new research study: "Bridging the Gap: Diverse Job Seekers, Employers and the Internet." The report reveals that 82 percent of ethnically diverse online job seekers believe that the resources a company dedicates to diversity recruiting reflects the company's overall commitment to creating a diverse workforce. Yet, only 54 percent of U.S. employers implement such recruitment programs.

Uniquely You - Employer Branding
By The David Group

Attracting and retaining the best and brightest employees is a daily struggle for most human resources professionals. Companies that try to recruit candidates with salary, benefits and other job-specific dimensions alone have missed the point. These attributes are easily matched by the competition. Take an alternative approach and develop a differentiation strategy that is difficult to copy or match — your employer brand.

Building an employer brand means creating a unique and appealing perception of your company in the minds of target candidates and employees that attracts, subtly encourages and retains them. Your employer brand clearly communicates what it feels like to work for your company. This intangible, yet compelling notion motivates target candidates to choose you as an employer. The bond created by a sense of shared values motivates and retains employees.

Developing an employer brand is not a small undertaking. Top management support is critical, as is a structured approach. What are the next steps?

Build a Brand Team
Developing and maintaining an employer brand is a far-reaching and ongoing process that benefits from a team approach. The team should include staff members responsible for approving strategic direction and creative within human resources. Additionally, a representative from the marketing department may be helpful in aligning the employer brand with the corporate brand. The team should meet regularly to discuss the various dimensions of the branding strategy and review progress and results.

Know Thyself
Understand what kind of employer you are. How do employees and candidates perceive the company? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What makes your company unique? Identify the one-of-a-kind characteristics, such as work environment, company history and values that attract, motivate and retain high quality employees.

Know Your Target Candidates
Through focus groups, surveys or in-depth interviews, find out what is important to prospective candidates when selecting an employer, how they see themselves as people and how they want to be seen. This will indicate which segment of the audience best fits your company and whom your brand should target. Once you understand your target audience, you will be able to communicate your company's unique characteristics in a way that is relevant to them. Prospective employees will see themselves, their lifestyles and their attitudes reflected in the employer brand and will feel aligned with you in an emotional way. This connection is just as important as the rational considerations of salary and benefits. It is also more lasting.

Develop Your Brand Strategy
Your brand is a statement about what your company stands for that is of value to employees and candidates. Your brand should be unique among your competitors, credible to your target candidates and employees and relevant to their needs.

The employer brand you develop should not compete with your marketing image. Rather, the two images should complement one another as prospective employees are often exposed to both.

Communicate and Integrate Your Employer Brand
Next, develop the employer brand message, graphic representation and supporting materials. Consistent support of your employer brand in all of your company's actions and words strengthens your brand. Your employer brand should be evident in your employee communications, recruitment marketing materials, Web site and recruiting process.

The David Group can help you every step of the way. We will assist you with research, develop a brand positioning strategy, create a unique image and design supporting materials that keep you a step ahead.

Final Note - On The Lighter Side

An American was going for a job interview in the English countryside and on the way out he asked a local farmer for directions, "Excuse me dude, could you possibly tell me the quickest way to London?" The farmer said: "You driving or walking, lad?" The American replied: "Driving." The farmer nodded, saying: "Yup, definitely the quickest way."
