A Note From The Editor
Recruiters’ Confidence
Increases In August
ExecuNet’s Recruiter
Confidence Index, which dropped last month, rebounded in
August. The recent survey of 147 executive recruiters
conducted by ExecuNet, a leader in executive-level job
and networking opportunities, reveals that recruiters
are expecting continued growth for the executive
employment market in the months ahead.
According to the survey, 57% of recruiters are confident
or very confident the executive employment market will
improve during the next six months -- up from 54% in
July. During this period of time, the executive search
industry is expecting a 17% increase in the number of
assignments it receives from clients - a pace that is
unchanged from last month.

Help-Wanted Index Declines One
Point
By Conference Board
The Conference Board’s Help-Wanted Advertising Index
– a key barometer of America's job market – dipped one
point in July. The Index now stands at 37, down from 38
the previous month. The Index was 38 one year ago.
In
the last three months, help-wanted advertising declined
in six of the nine U.S. regions. Declines occurred in
the West North Central (-7.2%), South Atlantic (-6.1%),
East North Central (-4.9%), East South Central (-4.1%),
Middle Atlantic (-2.1%) and Pacific (-2.0%) regions.
Increases occurred in the Mountain (6.1%), West South
Central (1.9%) and New England (0.1%) regions.
Says Conference Board Economist Ken Goldstein: “The
latest data show essentially no change through July.
Want-ad volume has not changed much over the past six
months. Initial unemployment claims reached a plateau in
March and have stayed fairly close to that level ever
since. Overall economic momentum is no longer firing on
all cylinders. And hiring intentions this summer are
suggestive that companies may not increase hiring until
the economy regains more solid footing.”
The Conference Board surveys help-wanted advertising
volume in 51 major newspapers across the country every
month. Because ad volume has proven to be sensitive to
labor market conditions, this measure provides a gauge
of change in the local, regional and national supply of
jobs.

Final Note - On The
Lighter Side
Want a day off work?
So you want a day off? Let's take a look at what you are
asking for. There are 365 days per year available for
work. There are 52 weeks per year in which you already
have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for
work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work,
you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days
available. You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break
which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days
available. With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up
another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for
work. You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave.
This leaves you only 20 days per year available for
work. We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available
working time is down to 15 days. We generously give 14
days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available
for work and I'll be darned if you are going to take
that day off!
