A Note From The Editor
The National Association of Colleges & Employers
released its Job Outlook 2004 Winter Update Survey. It
found that 17.4% of respondents only accept employment
applications online (and another 11.4% plan to adopt
that strategy)—the equivalent of saying that the
employer’s convenience is more important than the
preference of any customer (or, in this case, top
talent), while 53.3% say they have no plans to accept
applications online—the equivalent of living in the
world of business circa 1950. The best and brightest are
hard to recruit at any time, so if you’ve written a good
enough job posting to attract their interest, why
wouldn’t you take their application any way they want to
convey it … by Internet or mail, or by fax, paper
airplane or the pony express?

Breaking News
LEADING INDEX, JOBLESS CLAIMS UP
The index of leading economic
indicators edged up in April, and the number of initial
jobless claims rose, according to reports released
recently. The Conference Board said its index, a gauge
of how the economy will perform over the next three to
six months, rose 0.1 percent, following a revised March
increase of 0.8 percent, the largest jump since May
2003. The index has gone up 4.9 percent since April
2003, the most for a 12-month period since a 5.7 percent
increase in the year ended March 1984. The increase
during the past year is "consistent with GDP gross
domestic product growth of about 6.75 percent." The
increase in April was powered by higher stock prices,
more building permits, a wider spread between yields on
the Treasury's 10-year note and the overnight bank
lending rate, and an increase in the money supply. The
index of coincident indicators, a gauge of current
economic activity, rose 0.3 percent in April. The index
of lagging indicators increased 0.2 percent.
The government's report on May
employment is scheduled to be released June 4. The U.S.
added 288,000 jobs in April and 337,000 in March, the
biggest two-month increase in four years.

Why hire seniors and retirees?
By Art Koff
Hire seniors for project assignments or part-time and
save on healthcare costs
According to an Internet-based survey conducted by
Thomas Regional, of the nearly 2,500 industrial small
businesses owners surveyed nationwide, 63% of the
respondents state that healthcare coverage is their
biggest challenge. Hiring seniors to work part-time
or on temporary assignments in most cases saves health
care benefits costs.
Medicare benefits kick in at age 65, so insurance
benefits become less of an incentive for retirees; yet,
surveys have shown that people eligible to collect
pensions and Social Security do not necessarily want to
quit working. Many retirees continue working but seek
decreased and/or flexible hours. According to BSL
figures 54% of workers over 65 are employed part-time.
When
firms employing less than 20 employees hiring seniors on
Medicare for full-time
positions, Medicare can be the primary insurer and the
employer's insurance can be secondary. This means
substantial savings in insurance premiums.
A 2003 SHRM survey indicates that 68% of the
organizations employ older workers;
however only 41% specifically target older workers in
their recruitment efforts. The survey also indicated
that reasons for hiring older workers included their
willingness to work a flexible schedule, their ability
to serve as mentors and their invaluable experience.
Other reasons included their reliability and strong
work ethic.
