Trends Show: 3 out of 4 Hires to Come from Internet and
Referrals
Successful Sources Tighten with Job Market
Gerry Crispin and Mark Mehler, principals of
CareerXroads, today released their annual Source of Hire
survey results. In a presentation at the Newspaper
Advertising Association's Marketing Conference,
CareerXroads revealed trends and 2003 statistics from
some of the nation's largest corporations. Some of the
top findings:
-
60%
of all External Hires in 2003 can be attributed to two
'Channels'- Employee Referrals & the Internet and
these sources are continuing to grow. By 2005 these
sources are expected to account for 3 out of every 4
hires.
-
Is
it a "source" or a "destination"? Of the hires from
the Internet - employers report 67.9% came from the
Company Website.
-
"
Niche job sites were a larger source of hires from the
Internet in 2003 than leading job boards combined:
The
study also shows that while more positions were filled
in 2003 (6%) than 2002, slightly fewer positions will be
filled in 2004 (-2%). It's clear that the job market
will continue to be tight just as the sources most
likely to result in success continue to narrow. "We
believe our annual 2003 Source of Hires survey is an
indicator of things to come and, if you listen closely,
you'll hear several tolls of warning about rough weather
ahead," states Crispin.
"What does it mean to employers?" As Crispin notes,
"It's time to hone succession plans and retention
programs. For job seekers? Whenever possible apply
through an organization's own website and develop strong
referral networks."
The purpose of the study is to see how well companies
measure where they get their hires, and discover what is
being measured and how those measurements are derived.

Weekly Article
Virtual Recruiters Have Arrived!
By Frank
Risalvato
Back around 1998 I wrote a somewhat humorous article
forecasting the arrival of “Vir-Cruiters” a term I
coined for “Virtual Recruiters” … artificially
intelligent software that permits interaction. (My
original article is still listed under our articles
archive on
www.iresinc.com)
I
never thought for one minute that someday in a few years
to come, that I would be the one “training” the world’s
first Virtual Recruiting Assistant!
For those of you who have seen the movies A.I. or
Matrix the concept behind increasingly fast and powerful
software becoming impatient waiting for intolerably slow
humans … is not that far fetched. Anyone being second
guessed while trying to delete a document in MSWord 2000
only to be told “Are you Sure?”, or asking the resident
“Virtual Assistant” a question … is already interacting
with today’s first examples Artificial Intelligence:
Software that is trying to think ahead for us … while
providing us a more familiar means of interaction.
According to Paul B. Farrell who writes technology
related articles for CBS.MarketWatch.com, “at some point
between 2005 to 2030 … technology will implode into some
kind of black hole called “The Singularity”. (Paul’s
article title “Tech Funds headed into black hole”,
posted on May 29, 2003 is fun to read as well as thought
provoking.)
I knew all along that it would be just a matter of
time before “Virtuality” got a grip of the recruiting
industry. So when I received a call from a fellow by the
name of R.F. Culbertson back in 2002, inventor of
world’s first web-based Virtual Employees my interest
was peaked. R.F. indicated being interested in someone
to help provide him the linguistic “jargon” and “know
how” so he could transform his virtual employee into a
Virtual Recruiter … I was naturally intrigued.
Having had a keen interest in computers since first
playing with an IBM Mainframe in my Junior year in High
School (vintage 1976 – the no monitor/no graphic
interface days where a printout is all you received to
confirm your entries) … I gave Mr. Culbertson’s request
some thought … and after a few conversations agreed to
teach and train his virtual employee program to become a
virtual recruiter.
In exchange for many late nights working until the
wee hours of the morning, the folks at
www.eidoserve.com
agreed to let the virtual recruiter reside on our home
page for the next a few months so that Recruiters
Network members can get a taste of how this technology
might work in an actual operational setting. If you
visit www.iresinc.com
and click on Jenny, you can see and interact with the
world’s first Virtual Recruiter for yourself.
I find it curious and interesting myself, but unsure
of the ultimate value for the time being. As for my
kids, who had the opportunity to “Talk” to Jenny during
this project … they found “Jenny” (the name of our
virtual assistant) to be “Way Cool”.
By the way … for those of you who may dismiss this
technology is too “cartoonish” or childish … I just
noticed two new checkout lanes at Home Depot this
weekend … staffed by humanless technology instead of
cashiers! Remember the first 286 version PCs?.
It too was limited, quirky and difficult to interface
with unless you had a good understanding for MS-DOS. But
the 286 became the 486. And the 486 was capable of
running Windows 3.0 and … well … you know the rest.
Even video games have evolved from single “ping pong
balls” bouncing across the screen to highly resolute and
realistic baseball characters that it is sometimes
difficult to distinguish animated versus real. So this
type of technology will only improve.
Now back to Eidoserve, Inc. … RF wanted a complex
model. Not just a pre-screener. “What is the most
powerful role you’d want for an assistant he asked?
Well, rather than just pre-screening, an assistant
should be able to differentiate a hiring manager from an
applicant, dispense information and answer routine
questions, etc. I explained. He agreed if I wrote up the
various job descriptions he would “showcase” the
technology on
www.iresinc.com as a sample and now you can
experience it as well.
There are potentially many applications to this new
cutting-edge technology. So take a look, test it
yourself and let’s share your thoughts on Recruiters
Network … I’m sure there will be a lively discussion on
this. Meanwhile … keep in mind this type of technology
will only get MUCH better in a very few short years.
