8 Ways to Improve Your Open
House:
Get More Response for Your Dollar!
By Davis Advertising
1.
Maximize your time
Sure,
you want to make your event as easy as possible to
attend. But longer hours usually result in wasted time
for your company representatives - not increased
attendance. Early morning or late night hours seem like
they would be the most productive, since attendees will
not have to miss work. Apparently that's not an issue.
Keep the hours fairly short. And remember, after 7pm
people just want to be at home.
2.
Make it fun
Turn
your open house into an event by dangling a carrot in
front of the prospects. More accurately, dangle
refreshments, food, giveaways, and/or door prizes.
Develop a theme and have giveaways and decorations that
tie into the theme. A beach party in the winter. A
fajita party around Cinco de Mayo. This makes attending
your function more intriguing.
3.
Hedge your bets
Have
you ever thought about having an off-site job fair, but
want to make certain that the attendance will be there
before you pay for the hotel room(s) or even travel
expenses? For a local event, you could advertise an
"invitational open house." You ask prospects to respond
and set up appointments based upon their qualifications.
If the response isn't there, you can still cancel or
downsize the event. Or, in the case of out-of-town
recruiting, say that you will be in the local area "in
the near future." Again, if response is low, you have an
opportunity to change your plan.
4.
Use a broad media mix
Maximizing your attendance is critical. So, you need to
attract those who are actively looking for a job, as
well as those who are not aggressively looking for a new
position. The latter group - which is larger in number
than the active job seekers - would be more likely to
come to an open house rather than send a resume that
might get lost in the shuffle. So you will need both
traditional media, where the job seeker comes to the
message (like newspapers and Web postings), and
intrusive, where the message comes to the passive job
seeker (like radio or direct mail).
5.
Turn your employees into recruiters
You
probably already have an employee referral program. If
so, send out reminders to your employees that the open
house is an opportunity for them to earn the ERP reward.
You could even consider increasing the reward
exclusively for those referrals hired at the event. Or
go one step further. Print up small cards with open
house information for your employees to distribute to
referral candidates.
6.
Extend your print exposure
If
you've prepared your open house in advance, you should
consider adding a short section in appropriate ads prior
to the actual event media schedule. Ask the readers to
look for more details in the future. Or have them call a
special number for more information. Or - even better -
have a Web address exclusive to your employment efforts
the reader can access with complete details. For more
information about this, check out our past article.

7.
Invite prior applicants
You
have a valuable resource in the resumes stored within
your department walls. If they are captured in a resume
database, that's even better. In either case, you should
consider sending open house invitations to those who
would qualify for the positions in your search. It could
be direct mail or a colorful e-card, if e-mail addresses
are available.
8.
Follow-up to the event
Even
if a candidate is not ideal for the jobs currently
available, they may be valuable to you in the future.
This is a matter of course for most Human Resources
departments, but make certain you have a follow-up
communication. You might even consider having a "thank
you for attending" e-card that will be easy to
distribute and will grab the attention of the recipient.
