Job Seekers Give Bronx Cheer To Corporate Career Sites
By Peter Weddle

Job seekers are downright disillusioned with corporate career sites these days. That’s the latest finding in an on-going, 7+ year survey of job seeker behaviors and preferences on the Internet. The survey is being conducted by WEDDLE’s, a research and publishing company that specializes in guides and directories to Internet employment resources.

Although employers typically make large investments in building, operating and promoting their career sites, these destinations are not providing what job seekers want. For the second year in a row, job seekers placed corporate career sites behind commercial recruitment sites in terms of their helpfulness. As shown in the Table below, this finding marks a significant departure from previous years when candidates ranked corporate career sites as the most helpful job search and career management resource online.

Question: What was the most helpful job search activity that you performed online? (Rankings with 1 being most useful)

Activity 1997-2001 2002 2003
Searched jobs on commercial career sites 2 1 1
Posted a resume on commercial career sites

3

2 2
Researched employers on their sites 4 3 3
Searched jobs on employer sites 1 4 4

“These results do not diminish the importance of corporate career sites,” said Peter Weddle, Editor & Publisher of WEDDLE’s. “They do, however, make clear that the information and experience provided on many employer sites are not perceived favorably by prospective candidates. That situation undoubtedly undermines the ability of those organizations to recruit top talent.”

Other Findings From the WEDDLE’s Survey:

• 69% of job seekers found the Internet “very helpful,” 6% found it “hardly helpful,” and 2% found it “not helpful.”

• 60% of job seekers now visit recruitment sites twice a week or more, up from 52% in 2002.

• 73% now visit 7 or more recruitment sites in a given month. Increasingly, these are niche or specialty job boards, where WEDDLE’s found that traffic increased by almost 20% in 2002, while traffic at general purpose sites actually declined or did no better than the prior year.

About the Author
WEDDLE’s is a leading publisher of print guides, directories and other publications about the employment resources on the Internet. The American Staffing Association has called WEDDLE’s publisher, Peter Weddle, the “Zagat” of the employment industry.
