9
Ways to Make Your Ad Pop!
By Davis Advertising
1. Break out of the box
Use illustrative elements - such as photos and
illustrations - that break out of the normal rectangular
ad shapes. This will give your ad some distance from
your neighbors on the page and will add excitement to
the layout.
2.
Try an unusual shape
Instead of the usual rectangular border, try an unusual
shape like a circle. When publications allow it, try
extreme horizontal (billboards) or vertical shapes
(skyscrapers).
3. Minimize your copy
Because we are saturated with messages in so many forms
of media, people simply don't like to read as much as
they used to. They scan. So recruitment ads do better if
they have just enough copy to convey your company
culture and the requirements of your positions. Use the
rest of the ad space to punch up the graphics.
4. Focus on a single selling point
When you focus on a key selling point - such as
advancement, company growth, and benefits - your message
is more direct and accessible. This focus helps to
alleviate confusion in people's minds while the
simplicity increases readership.
5. Don't skimp on space when using graphics
Graphics such as photos and illustrations usually need
space in order to have impact. They should be relevant
and work in concert with your text. If you're trying to
save money and have to use a small space, you're better
served using a strong headline, logo and minimal
decorative elements.
6. Use color or add contrast to your black and
white art
Color really gives your ad impact. The results of a
seven-year study of trade advertising illustrated the
point. Of the one hundred top scoring ads, none where
black and white, 3 were two colors, and 97 were full
color. Another study showed full color ads receiving 40%
greater readership than other ads in the same
publication. But if you cannot afford the color, try
using black and white without screens or tints. This
high-contrast approach is ideal for newspapers.
7. Use original photography or illustration
Your advertising should present a unique image for your
company. That is best accomplished with photography or
illustrations that are original. If you use royalty-free
or other stock art, your ad can tend to look similar to
those of other companies - particularly in cluttered
recruitment advertising sections. And don't forget...the
style of your artwork or illustration should complement
and illustrate your employer brand, not someone else's.
8. Use white space
We know it's difficult to justify using "white space" in
expensive publications, but this is one of the most
effective design tricks to make your message stand out.
Think of white space as a way to keep your competition
"at arms length."
9. Keep it simple
The more you complicate your ad or message, the less it
will communicate. Since almost everyone likes to use
lengthy job and company descriptions, your ad will stand
out if you "keep it simple."
