Weekly Recruiting Tip
Recruitment Marketing 101
By WebFeet.com

This is an article about recruitment marketing. But before we get to that, let's consider what recruiting is and what it isn't.

Recruiting is not an administrative function. Gone are the days when recruiters could simply advertise for open positions and sort through the responses to find a suitable candidate for the job. The labor market has tightened, candidates are more savvy due to the wealth of information available on the Internet, and the old "want ad" is no longer adequate.

Companies are beginning to see recruiting as a strategic business issue that's critical to their success. The job description for recruiters has changed accordingly. Many recruiters have begun to describe their jobs (to quote a popular new phrase) as "marketing with a crummy budget."

The key to successful recruiting is to approach it as a marketing exercise, not an administrative task—and to use the tools of the marketing trade to build a competitive advantage in an increasingly crowded employment market.

What Does Recruitment Marketing Mean?
Recruitment marketing is the process by which employers attract candidates to apply for and accept jobs. Though the term is relatively new, employers have been doing recruitment marketing for as long as they've been hiring employees.

Some employers think that recruitment marketing entails advertising, and developing brochures or other collateral, but there's more to it than that. Every time you place a job listing or implement a program designed to increase worker satisfaction, you are practicing recruitment marketing. Whenever employees tell acquaintances what they like about their work, they are selling the company to potential candidates, and that's recruitment marketing.

Recruiting and Marketing Are Inseparable
The results of a recent WetFeet.com study indicate that the more candidates are aware of a company, the greater their application rate will be. Two-thirds (63 percent) of all employed professionals surveyed in the study knew of their company before learning about its employment opportunities, suggesting that candidates tend to pursue jobs at organizations with which they are already familiar.

But not only do you need to attract candidates, you want the most highly qualified candidates to apply for your jobs. A sophisticated recruitment marketing strategy can help you target and effectively appeal to those segments of the candidate market you'd like to recruit most.

Steps to an Effective Recruitment Marketing Strategy
A good recruitment marketing strategy will help you differentiate your company from your competitors in the hiring arena, and position it as an "employer of choice." To develop an effective strategy, you must:

Carefully assess your target-candidate market, using primary and secondary market research.

  • Develop compelling "products," that is, jobs, and all the tangible and intangible benefits they entail that will appeal to constituents of the target market.
  • Establish a well-defined employer brand that describes who you are as an employer, and differentiates you from your competitors in the employment space.
  • Build brand awareness by creating a presence within the target market through the use of advertising, viral marketing, sponsorship, press, online presence, employee referrals, and as many other vehicles as you can think of.
