Reach Your Peak - Developing a culture of practice in your company
Scott Wintrip

While watching the Olympics months ago, I was reminded of how different our profession is from many others. From that we can learn much, in particular, about how we learn and master our trade.

In a single moment, an athlete's performance determines if they will get the chance to stand on the medals platform. Yet, that moment is defined by the thousands of hours of practice that led up to the event.

Imagine if an Olympic athlete spent just a few days learning and practicing the mechanics of their sport. I can just picture the resulting performance as they take the floor for the competition. There is the strong likelihood of a highly flawed performance as well as the chance of injury to both themselves and others.

How do Olympians get to be some of the top athletes in the world? Practice, mentoring and coaching, and even more practice. And this idea is not unique to just athletes. Attorneys spend hours in mock trials before taking on their
first real case. Doctors spend years in internships before opening their practice. Commercial truck drivers maneuver their rigs on off-road driving courses before ever hitting the open road. Massage therapists are required to
practice their craft a prescribed number of hours before taking on paying clients.

Okay, we in staffing and search businesses are not Olympians, Attorneys, Doctors, Truck Drivers or Massage Therapists. We don't win medals, save lives with medical treatment, or experience the dangers of operating heavy equipment. But, we do greatly impact one of the most important aspects of people's lives - their job. And the most valuable resource of every company - the people that work there.

Even though we have such a critical impact on people and companies, what is missing from a significant portion of our industry is a culture of practice. Many companies agree that almost all of the experience of their staff members is gained while doing their jobs. These same companies also acknowledge the benefit of practice. And admit that it is simply something they do not get around to doing on a regular basis.

I am not against on-the-job experience. In fact, many of the skills I teach today came from personal experience gained through that wonderful school known as hard knocks. Also, I am not proposing that you disrupt your business by
sending your staff to months of training and education. What I am suggesting is that you take the valuable training and on-the-job experience you currently offer and combine that with an Olympic spirit. That being a spirit and culture of practice, practice, practice.

To assist you, here are some pointers on developing a consistent culture of practice in your company:

1. If practice sessions or role-plays are already regular occurrences at your company, my hat's off to you. I challenge you to find a way to do this even more!

2. For those of you who cringe at the words "role play," then call it something else that is more palatable for you. And if you dislike role-plays because they are normally done in front of a group, then find a buddy and practice privately one-on-one. The key here is incorporating practice in your calendar while using a format that works for you.

3. Practice sessions are not a part of many company cultures because it is not a part of the routine. It is a good idea that is often forgotten. By scheduling a weekly time for this activity, within a span of a few weeks, you may find this becomes a popular event. For example, at one of my previous companies, we would all bring our lunch on Fridays. Then we'd pull our chairs together and take
turns role-playing different scenarios for 60-90 minutes. Add that up, and we were getting at least 50 to 75 hours of quality practice every year.

4. Figure skaters will try out and refine new elements of their routine during practice sessions. Once they develop a comfort level, they will add these elements into their performance. Practice sessions in our business can give us
the same benefit. As we try out different techniques and even take some risks during role-plays, we often break out of old habits and take on new and more productive behaviors.

If you are ready to create a culture of practice, I encourage you to take action right now. The next few minutes of planning may make the difference that lands
you on top of that medals platform!
