Resume Sourcing – Advanced Search Tip
By Karen Osofsky

Here’s a quick refresher on finding resumes in some of the online directories and communities. Using one of my favorite search engines, AlltheWeb, www.alltheweb.com, which is powered by FAST, I was quickly able to find hundreds of resumes on Yahoo and AOL.

Yahoo
Even though Hot Jobs is now the career section of Yahoo, there are still hundreds of Yahoo members that have their resumes posted outside of the Hot Jobs resume database. These resumes are easily accessible simply by using AlltheWeb to X-RAY part of the Yahoo domain. (Note: the results are NOT HotJobs resumes, but resumes posted on the Yahoo site itself.

For those of you that are not familiar with the X-RAY technique, it is a research method that searches through all web pages associated with a particular domain (URL).

To do this go to AlltheWeb.
Click on the Advanced Search link.
In the first field pull down menu, click on Must Include.
In the second field across enter the term resumes.yahoo.com.
In the third field across pull down menu, click on in the URL.
Now click on Search.
The results should be links to approximately 500 resumes.

To refine this search for specific skills, keep everything above the same and in the second row of fields do the following.
In the first field pull down menu, click on Must Include.
In the second filed across enter the term or terms you want for the specific skill the person needs to have listed in their resume (ie. accounting).
In the third field across pull down menu, click on in the text.
Now click on Search.
The results will now be limited to the yahoo resumes that contain they keyword you entered.

AOL
The same type of search can be accomplished using AOL instead of Yahoo.
Still using AlltheWeb
Click on the Advanced Search link.
In the first field pull down menu, click on Must Include.
In the second field across enter the term members.aol.com.
In the third field across pull down menu, click on in the URL.
Now go to the second row of fields.
In the first field pull down menu, click on Must Include.
In the second field across enter the term resume.
In the third field across pull down menu, click on in the URL
Now click on Search.
The results should be links to several thousand resumes of AOL members.

To refine this search for specific skills, follow the same refining methodology as the Yahoo example by putting in your skills keyword in the third row of fields using Must Include and in the text as the pull down menu selections.

Happy resume searching!!
