Weekly Recruiting
Tip -
Using Associations as a Recruiting Tool
By Brian Weis
Internet
Recruiting is more than just posting jobs on the large
national career sites. It has been well documented in
our newsletter and by various industry experts that
Internet Recruiting is the art of posting jobs on career
sites and your company website, utilizing resume
databases, and searching online communities for passive
jobseekers, flipsearching, etc.
Utilizing
Associations and their websites is Internet Recruiting
MEthod that should be mastered. Below is a summary of
ways to use Associations as a recruiting tool. To
demonstrate my points I will use the following example.
I work for 123 Account Services and we are looking for
several CPA's. I have identified several Accounting
related associations and I will start with the American
Society of Women Accountants (aswa.org)
1. Job
Postings/Resume Databases - Many association offer job
postings and a resume database on their site. The costs
vary but many are very reasonable and some are even
free. In our example, ASWA.org offers a simple jobs
database. At the time of writing this there was only a
handful of job postings in their database. This is an
ideal place for me to post my job. They have thousands
of members and only a few positions on their site. My
postings is going to be a tractor in a haystack. (In the
national sites my jobs are a needle in a haystack)
2.
Chapter Directory - What a better way to find local
talent in an industry than to network locally with an
association or chapter of an association. Contact the
chapter to network, attend a local meeting, etc.
ASWA.org lists their local chapters and a contact
person. In my example, I would contact the local
chapters and network with the chapter president. Maybe
attend a local function to network or maybe give them my
job opening to mention in their meetings. These local
chapters can ge ta goldmine for candidates.
3.
Members Directory - Many Associations will publish their
full or partial membership directories online. These
lists are worth their weight in gold and are great
resources of potential jobseekers and/or networking
contacts. ASWA.org does not post a directory but does
post their Board of Directories. These are great
networking contacts.
4.
Message Boards - Many associations will develop an
online community with message boards or listservs. Use
proper netiquette here and view the message board rules
before proceeding. Messages boards are a great source
for candidate leads and a way to network. ASWA.org does
not have a message board.
5.
Conferences/Tradeshows - Tradeshows and conferences are
another great networking venue. If your budget allows
you might want to consider exhibiting at the booth.
ASWA.org does have a conference. This might be a great
place to exhibit and operate the conference like a job
fair. (Ask the association if they allow this!)
There are many other ways
to utilize Associations as networking/recruiting tools.
Now that we have an understanding of their value the
next step is to find these associations. There are some
great resources on and offline.
1. Weddle's
Guide to Association Web Sites
This guide explores in greater depth how to use
Associations as a recruiting resource. The guide also
lists over 1,500 professional, technical and trade
associations and indicates what kinds of recruiting
services (i.e., job board, resume database, other) they
provide. It's a one-of-a-kind reference for corporate
and staffing firm recruiters and executive search
consultants.
2. Recruiters
Network Association Directory List
Recruiters Network has compiled a list of the top
online Association Databases.
Best of luck in utilizing
associations in your recruiting!
