Recruiting Tip - How to Search a Resume Database
By Bret Hollander, Netrecruiter
When searching a resume database, DO NOT look for job classifications. Place the
exact skills you need in your search query. Chances are you will find the exact
match. As an example, most software programmers will never specifically say in
their resume that they are "software programmers." They usually say
they "programmed software," or performed "software
programming," or wrote an application using C++ and SQL applications.
Searching on the term "software programmer" will only lead you to a
few candidates. Instead, search using C++ and SQL and program or programming or
programmed. This should increase your search results many times over.
Search on Older Resumes - most recruiters are TOO concerned about the age
of a resume. Well if you want to talk to a candidate that has already talked to
60 other recruiters in the last 48 hours, by all means go ahead. The value in
any resume database are the older resumes, the archived resumes that are between
6 months to 18 months old. These candidates are NOT getting calls. Now you've
eliminated your competition. Secondly, we all know the average stay of an
employee in the technical market today. So by contacting these older resumes
your chances are better in finding a candidate ready to make a move, or a
candidate coming up on his or her contract. Now you have a candidate primed to
listen to your offer.
The Contact Information is Bad - I almost hope the contact information is
bad on an older database resume. Why? Because that's where my recruiting
competitors stop looking. Don't give up on the candidates. Many times it doesn't
take long to track these people down. Call their last place of employment, dial
411, go to HotBot and track them by new address, phone or email. You want to get
in front of candidates that aren't being contacted by every other competitor.
Believe me, this methods has resulted in hundreds of hires.
Network, Network, Network - not every candidate you call is going to be
interested in your job. Fine. But do you ever ask for a reference? A Java
developer probably hangs out with other Java developers. Don't be afraid to ask.
Many placements have not been from the exact resume on a database, but from a
referral from that resume.
Finding the Right Resume Database - you should exhaust every possible
avenue to locate a candidate. That means using every resume database you can get
your hands on. But make sure you're not wasting time on databases that don't
have what you want. Focus on resume databases that pertain to what you're
looking for. If you require highly technical individuals, go to the resume
databases that specialize in these individuals. Lower level candidates? Try some
of the free sites on the web. Make sure that your database doesn't purge their
resumes. This is a must. Especially when you're looking for legacy candidates,
or candidates who have skills in older software or hardware applications.
Companies that purge their database every six months will eliminate an
incredible source for networking. Try to find a resume database that contains
resumes from between now and two years old. Make sure you can search by
"date of resume" on databases of this type.
Editor's Note: Bret Hollander is a new columnist who works for
Netrecruiter. NETRECRUITER provides varying levels of off-site technical
candidate sourcing services to corporate clients. Not only will their clients
experience a reduction in overall recruiting and hiring expenses, but they will
also experience an increase in the quality level of new hires. Their industry
expertise spans the commercial, public sector and federal markets. Visit them at

Site Of The Month - Center for American Jobs
The Center for American Jobs Helps Employers Quickly Source & Recruit
Pre-qualified Hourly-Blue Collar-Clerical & Administrative Employees
The Center for American Jobs runs its client/employer's openings in their ads at
no charge to their clients. Candidates reading these ads call a toll-free number
and spend a few minutes on the telephone answering a series of job related
questions designed to pre-qualify them to employers' hiring standards. At the
conclusion of this "First Interview," the system compares the job
seeker's answers to CAJ member employers' hiring criteria and, where there is a
match, automatically faxes or e-mails a profile of each qualified job seeker to
the employer. While the screening process is selective by design, it is
completely unbiased, and the questions used are fully EEOC compliant. There is
no fee to job seekers for this service.
CAJ's proprietary interactive voice technology allows candidates, responding to
advertising the ability to create a profile 24 hours a day, just using a
touch-tone phone. Employers looking to hire these candidates in a specified
geographic area, and with the particular experience and skills required, contact
them directly. Employers also can listen to candidates (phone system provides an
opportunity for a recorded message) prior to inviting them in for an in-person
interview.
The Center for American Jobs currently operates in Chicago and Detroit with
plans to open 38 additional major markets in 2001. Recruiters Network members
can use the services described above in these two markets at a special cost of
$500* a month for unlimited access to profiles.
When contacting the Center please identify yourself as a Recruiters' Network
member.
